Interview with Melissa Anne Peterson

What are 5 things you would want to find?

  1. Heart shaped rocks along the river

  2. A friendly Bigfoot

  3. A fairy who wants to sit on my windowsill and talk while I wash dishes

  4. A secret river filled with salmon spawning

  5. A beautiful futuristic city out of Ecotopia, the utopian novel by Ernest Callenbach

What are 5 things you would want to hide?

  1. Sometimes I hide chocolate from my four-year-old

  2. Wildflower seeds of rare plants

  3. Sometimes I hide emotions

  4. Old comfortable clothes I can’t bring myself to get rid of

  5. All good fishing spots

If you could choose anywhere in the world for your book to be hidden, where would it be?

On top of Snæfellsjökulls Glacier in Iceland. In the book, Under the Glacier, by Icelandic author Halldór Laxness , the glacier holds special powers. I would hope that whoever found it would become very lucky.

If you could find any book, which would it be and why?

I would love to find a book of stories that Paleolithic people told around campfires. I want to know what their hopes and dreams were, what they were afraid of, what they thought was most precious, and what they believed in. They lived on this planet for a long time, and we don’t know enough about their personal lives to satisfy my curiosity. It’s a great mystery.

Who would you want to find your book (another author, celebrity, et cetera)?

My friend Crystalee who passed away in 2016. I would want her to see that I really did it. The people who believed in me through all the struggles hold a special place in my heart, and I wish she could have been here with me to see it all play out.
